Aerobic ponds are typically shallow (less than 2 metres), large ponds which are commonly found downstream of anaerobic ponds.

Their main purpose is to reduce BOD5 concentrations to levels suitable for irrigation to land without odour and to ensure that there is a reasonable level of dissolved oxygen (DO) in the treated water.
